Oh Where, Oh Where Did “Mare” Go?

Having been absent from my blog for almost three weeks, I was thinking (danger, danger!!) about how to begin this entry.  Then from out of nowhere, this childhood tune entered into my head and I began to play around with the lyrics just a tiny bit and it came out like this  :

Oh where, oh where has Crick’s crazy “nut” gone?

Oh where, oh where has she been?

When the power went out and the family moved in

Oh where, oh where did she go?

If, as they say, “a picture is worth a thousand words”, then these few pics tell the whole story of the past several weeks.

A day after the last post, we had a thirty minute violent storm pass through central Ohio bringing with it 70-80 mph winds which toppled hordes of trees and brought down power lines all over the area.  Within minutes, nearly every single family member with the exception of my brother Tommy & my sister Kathy had lost all power.   Up until the “great” snow/ice storm and power outage of Christmas, 2004 in which power was out for days, and in some cases, weeks; we had never worried too much about losing electricity as the power was usually restored in a matter of hours.  Then, in September, 2008 we had the effects of Hurricane Ike bring hurricane force winds into Columbus and all electricity was again lost for up to seven days.  When we lost power at that time, Crick had gone on craigslist and purchased a generator, because I moaned and complained that I just had to have my hair dryer!!!! (Heaven knows I could have cared less about not being able to “boil” that pot of water LOL).  Now here is the great question I have been pondering, was Crick pleading with God on my behalf so that I was spared the loss of electricity and the use of my precious hair dryer, or, was there some serious bargaining going on between him and God, so as to make sure that each one of our adult children, as well as Christine and Mike, lost their power, thus making my house the “go to” place for refrigeration, laundry, showers,  electronic charging station, television & video viewing, eating a hot meal and hanging out (Stephanie, Joe and the 3 grandkids……..were there really only 3…..were here for five days………..was it really only five……..Joe, I am just kidding!! ????).   Is Crick really getting the “last laugh”????!!!!  It remains a great question :).

Eventually, Stephanie, Joe and kids moved out (LOL) as the AEP crews, having worked long hours in incredible heat, restored power and returned everyone back to the 21st century.  We were then able to celebrate the birthdays of Olivia, Katie and the USA before heading to Kure Beach, North Carolina on July 7th with a contingent of 27 family members  (unfortunately, Steph, Joe and the kids had to pass this trip up as Stephanie is in her next to last quarter of nursing school………..I do believe Joe was silently breathing a sigh of relief………having spent five days living under the same roof as his “nutty” mother-in-law, another seven days may have sent him over the edge!!  LOL).  We were fortunate to find an affordable 12 bedroom duplex which accommodated our large group very nicely.  There was access to both sides off of the upper deck and so all of the younger kids found great pleasure in playing hide and seek between the two sides when they had had enough of the sun and surf.  The pier was just up the road from the house where the kids could get an ice cream cone and play arcade games in the evening.  Everyone was free to come and go as they pleased and sort of “do their own thing”.   No matter the time of day, there always seemed to be someone who was ready to ride the waves, search for seashells, play some beach volleyball or a game of wiffle ball, sit down for a game of euchre, “pass the trash” or catch-phrase.   On Tuesday, Todd, Tom, Mike, Leah and Erin got up early to embark on a four-hour fishing trip during which time they caught over 50 Spanish mackerel, some of which then became our dinner for that evening.  As they were all discussing the events of the morning, I couldn’t help but remember how Crick loved to fish, although “catching” fish was something that often eluded him.  I used to say that it was a holiday for all sea life whenever Crick headed out somewhere with his tackle box and fishing pole :).  He did manage to bring back a little “surprise” for me when we were at North Topsail Beach a couple of years ago.  He had apparently been waiting very patiently for me this particular day to come up the stairs, and then when he heard me open the door. he presented me with his “catch” of the day (someone (Jessica) just happened to have her camera ready)…………….it was only a little old sand shark, but it was still alive and wiggling, and as you can tell from the picture, I wanted nothing to do with it!   You see, sand sharks are but one reason why I don’t venture very far out into the ocean water…….squishy, gritty sand under my feet, sand in my suit and in my hair, and salt water on my lips are several others.  My bird phobia also served to provide a bit of family entertainment as I tried to relax in my comfy beach chair while gazing out at the beautiful blue and aqua water, for I was continually startled and tormented by low flying sea gulls.  This may seem quite inconsequential to more seasoned beach goers, but I nearly fell out of my chair ducking and weaving  to avoid being in their flight path.  Not only did these sea gulls seem to single me out on the beach, they also targeted me while we were dining out on a pier one night in Wrightsville Beach.   The particular sea-gull in the picture seemed to delight in circling our table as we were eating, occasionally landing precariously close to us on one of the umbrella tops or wooden posts, and at other times vigorously flapping his wings as he hovered over a nearby railing.  He did this so many times that I would have sworn Crick had come back reincarnated as the pesky, annoying sea-gull :).   I admit that I really am a big beach sissy, but perhaps a few more trips to the ocean and I may actually conquer my fears and wade all the way into the ocean up to my waist and bring along a picnic lunch for the birds!   I do, after all, consider myself to be still a work in progress!!  Wait…………………..did I just say p-r-o-g-r-e-s-s…….. that  sets off a little bell in my brain, as in p-r-o-g-r-e-s-s-i-v-e, which leads to the dreaded “p” word!  I will apologize right now for continuing on this hazardous path, but while I had “Oscar” (laptop) with me and internet access, there was always too much going on to devote any time to keeping up with the “outside” world.  Now that I am home and have re-engaged with the blogoshpere……I find my “obsession” has reignited.  I just want to let you all know, that as I was quite innocently walking down to the pier one evening with the grandkids, I was taking note of all of the various beach homes and as I came to this particular house what do you suppose stared right back at me?????  Not just one, not just two, not just three, but 5 Barack Obama posters and signs strategically placed in the windows on all three levels of the house…………….they could hear my “ranting” all the way back to our duplex LOL!!

I do have a little confession to make…………I donated to Obama’s campaign……………G-A-S-P!!  Better make that a double G-A-S-P!!  I think the devil made me do it.  You see, I received an e-mail from the Obama campaign stating that if I donated to the campaign, I would be entered into a raffle and if selected, I would be invited to have dinner with the President as well as select his dinner partner.   I just could not pass up this opportunity and so I clicked on the donate icon and entered in my $1.00 donation………………….it was rejected!!!!  Apparently, the minimum donation is $3.00, and so I mulled that over for a moment, held my breath, waited for lightening to strike, and then clicked “donate”.  The “deed” was done, but then the fun part came as I was directed to a page with an insert designated for typing in the name of the person being chosen for the President’s dinner partner.  Very carefully I began to type in…………………………..G-L-E-N-N  B-E-C-K!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Oh yes, that $3.00 was a very small price to pay for the momentary pleasure that one act provided to me!!  And now, that I have managed to sneak that name into my blog, this seems to be a great opportunity to give a “shout out” to Chris, Jessica, Sophia & Sydney who decided to take part in Beck’s National Lemonade Stand & Bake Sale Day in June which raised almost $400.00 and was split between two charities (Mercury One, provided 600 pounds of food to feed the needy and the Peletonia/One Goal, a bike tour which raises funds to fight cancer).  It was so encouraging to witness so many people willing to give generously on behalf of those in need – one gentleman handed Christopher a  crisp $100 bill!!

The simplest acts of kindness are by far more powerful than a thousand heads bowing in prayer.          Mahatma Gandhi

Looking back, as I am want to do these days, over the past few weeks especially, thinking of all of the recent family moments………….the birthdays, graduations, showers, weddings, the lemonade stand, t-ball, baseball & softball games, the beach vacation and even the power outage……..it gives me pause to reflect yet once again, how very blessed I have been and how very grateful I am for all of the wonderful people in my life, be they family or friends.  When I close my eyes at night, I can truly say that I am at peace knowing that I have my Faith, I have my Family, I have my Friends and I have Hope :).

Have courage for the great sorrows of life and patience for the small ones; and when you have laboriously accomplished your daily task, go to sleep in peace.  God is awake.                          Victor Hugo

P.S.  I owe a great, big thank you to Jay for insisting that I bring my car into his shop to have the oil changed (one of those jobs Crick always took care of and one that I definitely will not be taking on), and while checking over the tires, he found a large bulge in one of the rear tires.  He set me up with a brand new tire which made the journey a safe one :)………..if you are looking for a trustworthy mechanic, I highly recommend Jay’s NASCAR Garage!!

P.P.S.  Another first for me was that I drove the entire way home from North Carolina, something I would never have needed to do with Crick around……it was always much more fun for me to be the “backseat driver”………… and I could sure “drive” him crazy without ever touching the wheel!!! LOL

You Would All Be Right

Guess to whom this saying refers!!!

I was sitting here pondering over the gazillion thoughts darting back and forth inside my head, searching for a way to begin this blog, and then I remembered the mug I had removed from the dishwasher earlier today.   A daily reminder that “the jig is up” as, apparently, over many years,  I have been revealing way too much of my strong-willed, somewhat stubborn, some might even say, “controlling” personality (LOL…….you are laughing about that controlling part, aren’t you?? ) to way too many family members  (it may have begun unraveling around the time of the highly touted King’s Island Main Street “incident” …….a not so quiet, very public stand-off that Caringbridge followers may remember occurred between Crick and me on a corner of a street in the amusement park on a blistering hot summer’s day over where to eat lunch……….outside of Restaurant #1 at a picnic table sitting on hard wooden seats with the sun beating down on us in the company of several different kinds of pesky insects…………..ooooorrrrrr…………….inside of Restaurant #2 sitting on soft padded chairs to be “waited on” in air-conditioned luxury and comfort!!!!!).  Now perhaps you are wondering who in the world  would feel a relationship with me to be so secure that he/she felt this sort of mug gift would not prove to be offensive??  Well, besides Crick (who secretly may have been wishing he had thought of it first…..LOL!).   Think sibling, think youngest female, think “Clark Culinary Queen ” (I taught her everything she knows about boiling water!!!!!!!), think person who is married to “Crick Jr.” (a brother-in-law who bears that title proudly)……………………………………………………………………..

Christine,………………………………………. you may take a bow as I am sure all family members are now applauding the Lucy likeness to moi :).  However, I would like everyone to remember that, regarding the “Great Pumpkin”, Lucy was right!!!!!!!!

As the previous blog was taken up with the details of my “heaven” encounter  (and, by the way, I have now read the book and, having many years ago read of others’ NDE’s (near death experiences), I can attest to the comfort and hope provided by these revelations),  I will detail just a few of the highlights of the activities of the past month.:

  •  In late May, I paid a visit to Glacier Ridge Elementary to return a book that was presented to me at the funeral home which the Glacier Ridge library had decided to dedicate in Crick’s memory.  It was a touching story of a Grandpa who was just the sort of character and mentor that Crick had been to all of the school kids.  Ann, one of the school’s secretaries gave me a copy of the 2011/2012 yearbook which had a touching memorial dedication on the first page.   I took with me two small gifts for Lauren and Maureen, teachers at GRE whom Crick had teased mercilessly about their politics (imagine that!!).  Back in October they had brought a huge bag of handmade Get Well wishes from students from each grade to the hospital along with a gift from Maureen of a red “Beanie Baby” elephant and some of Crick’s favorite “mints”.  She told Crick there was a companion blue donkey, but that she had kept that one for herself!  LOL  Anyway, I returned the elephant to Maureen so that she could remember which way to vote in November (jjjjjjjjjuuuuuuuussssstttt kidding!) and I gave a Barack Obama bell with a  tiny GOP flag to Lauren!!  (If only the election were not such a deadly serious topic)…………………….don’t worry, I am not going there :)
  • I have been most fortunate to have been visited by a couple of very dear high school friends in the past couple of weeks……………………I was treated to breakfast at Bob Evans with Tim Lavelle who was on his way, via motorcycle, from Florida, crossing the USA all by his lonesome…………quite an adventure and one Crick would have been quite envious of.  (oops, there’s that darn preposition again!).  Tim was encouraged by his son to write a blog of his journey (http://timlavelle.blog.com) and, as Tim is a funny guy, his blog is quite entertaining and filled with some amazing pictures of the beauty that is the USA.  While at breakfast, Tim had mentioned to me that he was thinking about heading to the Grand Canyon.   I immediately thought of Crick who, because of his “dreamcrusher” wife, missed out on, according to Crick, “the opportunity of a lifetime”!  Fifteen years ago, Crick and I had an occasion to visit Arizona for four days, compliments of the dental practice I was working for at the time.  We had a rental car, and there was a discussion among the small group of us, about taking a day and driving from Phoenix to the Grand Canyon.  Now, not only am I afraid of heights, but it was also the thought of driving hours to get some place just to see a “bunch of rocks” (I know, I know, I know…… I have seen magnificent pictures of the grandeur that is this national treasure, but at the time………………..the lure of the resort’s swimming pool just seem way more relaxing!!!).  Anyway, forever after that trip, whenever there was any mention of the Grand Canyon, I would get an earful of how I had deprived DH (dear husband) (who had only this one chance to travel West to God’s country…… his definition of Arizona and Colorado) of seeing “up close and in person” THE GRAND CANYON!!!  Therefore, I suggested to Tim that if he did choose the Grand Canyon route, maybe he could give a shout out in Crick’s memory……………………..well, Tim did one better than that………………….he made it his “mission” to go to the Grand Canyon taking a memento of Crick’s that I had given to Tim and placed it on the rocks in the south rim of the canyon overlooking some magnificent scenery :)  Hats off to Tim!!!!!!!!!!!!
The other visit was from Beth who stayed overnight coming and going from Pittsburgh to Indianapolis to visit family.  We were able to catch up on our families and had long, long discussions about religion and politics……………………..the perfect combo LOL!!!!!  I nominate her to defend me in a court of law should I ever happen to be impugned for my writings as a “right wing nut”!!!!
  • The Clark family gathered in Granville for Shannon and Dave’s wedding on the 16th of June.  Nephews Jake, Sean and Matt came home for their sister’s big day.  Matt drove up from New Orleans, Jake flew in from California, but Sean topped them both…………..he surprised Shannon at the rehearsal dinner flying all the way from South Korea where he is teaching English!!  Now that is true brotherly love, don’t you think???   And what a great time we all had dancing to Shout, Sweet Caroline, YMCA, etc., and the little kids all loved the rendition of the Chicken Song.  Thank goodness, my left foot was completely healed so I could stay out on the dance floor till the very end (and no, it wasn’t pretty, but it was great fun!!).   The one song that has become a Clark tradition since Jennifer and Jim’s wedding 15 years ago is The Piano Man………………..from youngest to oldest this gets them all out on the floor forming a gigantic circle singing and swaying to the music of Billy Joel.

My word counter is telling me that it is time to wrap this up, besides I have a lot of “homework” to do now that the Supreme Court has made my life more difficult……………..sorry, I can only hold it in for soooooooo long :).  That being said, this is a good time to reflect on a reading from a few days ago.

“Stay calmly conscious of Me today, no matter what.  Remember that I go before you as well as with you into the day.  Nothing takes Me by surprise.  I will not allow circumstances to overwhelm you, so long as you look to Me.  I will help you cope with whatever the moment presents.  Collaborating with Me brings blessings that far outweigh all your troubles.  Awareness of My Presence contains Joy that can endure all eventualities.”                                    from  Jesus Calling

“The Lord is my Shepherd, I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures;
He leads me beside still waters;
He restores my soul. He leads me in right paths For His Name’s sake.
Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I fear no evil;
For you are with me;
Your rod and Your staff – they comfort me.
You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies, You anoint my head with oil;
My cup overflows.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me All the days of my life. And I shall dwell in the house of the Lord My whole life long.”

                                   Prologue

I am inserting this little notation as a way to explain my absence for a week.   I started this post seven days ago, but as life often gets in the way of life (well, that’s how I define all of the interruptions!) such as, just as I am sure you all may also experience, the June array of bridal showers, weddings, graduations, birthdays, pool time, baseball outings, lawn care (that pesky euonymus!), jobs (even the 5-10 hour/week ones…LOL), lemonade stands (to be explained in the next post), religious liberty rallies (ditto for the next post), visits from old friends, research for “p” blogs………………………well…………………..you get the picture.

     Post

Where do I begin???????????  Well, I know where I won’t begin………………………….I won’t begin with any words about our President & I further promise you that I will not utter one, single, solitary political utterance for the entire length of this blog post!!!!!  There……………………….are you all breathing a sigh of relief?? You may now “safely” proceed:

Before the Memorial Tournament interrupted my thought process last week and started me out on a whole different topic than I had intended (which I cannot reference as it would lead to the mentioning of the “p” word…….LOL),  I had planned to write about another rather remarkable incident that happened to me.  It was the last Wednesday of the school year in which all eight grades at I.C. had their last opportunity to gather at Mass as an entire student body.  Usually there is a small group of daily church goers who remain after the Mass to pray the rosary, but on this particular day, after all of the students had finally departed, I found myself to be the only one remaining with the exception of one or two parishioners who were helping out in the sacristy.  And so, I decided to go over to one of the shrines devoted to  Our Lady which is set off to the side in the rear of the church.   I took out the rosary which had belonged to my Mom and began to meditate on the Glorious Mysteries.  Now for those of you who are not familiar with the Catholic tradition of the rosary,  it consists of the recitation of specific prayers corresponding with particular beads (from the Anglo-Saxon word “bede”, meaning prayer).  Around the rosary chain there are five sets of each of these beads and each set of ten beads is called a decade, and the thoughts during the prayer are directed to focus on a different mystery representing significant events in the life of Christ and Mary, His Mother.  (Clarks do not tell “short” stories!!!!)…………..now back to the Glorious Mysteries upon which  I was attempting to meditate!!!  I usually find the events of these Glorious Mysteries to be the more difficult for me to focus on as two of the Mysteries reflect on the Resurrection and Ascension of Christ into heaven (thus, it requires meditating on that very elusive and unnerving term………………….eternity!).   For some reason, as I was trying to put myself back to the moment in time when the two “Mary’s” went to inspect the tomb and encountered the angel who rolled back the stone and gave them the news that Jesus had been raised just as He had promised, I began to think about all of the “angels” that I have encountered in my life, especially over these last two years.  And then I questioned……………..just what would I have believed, had I lived over two thousand years ago, had I happened upon an Angel of God and an empty grave?? And then my terribly distracted mind started veering off track, wondering if “heavenly” angels really do have wings and what feathery material would they be made of…………..are the birds with their “feathery wings” and flying capability (minus their “annoying” chirping sounds LOL) thus divinely designed??  Does this then make the angels really stand out in heaven among all of those earthly beings (you know, like Crick) who dwell among them but have never had wings???

Fortunately…………… I came to the tenth bead (I probably should have started that decade over as I don’t think “angels”, their “wings” and the bird analogy was the type of “meditation” intended for spiritual growth!), and it was time to move on to the mystery of the Ascension of Our Lord into Heaven (reference previous comment from above regarding Clarks and “short” stories :-) ).  And, as I have just so clearly illustrated my inability to remain focused, I do keep with me a prayer-book which includes a chapter on specific thought-provoking scriptural passages pertaining to each mystery on a bead by bead basis.  I have found this to be immensely helpful (well…………….most of the time!).  As I was reflecting on the words………….”He goes to prepare a place for us, and has returned to the Father, in Heaven.  And He has promised: “Where I am, you can be too.”  I began to think of Crick and of all my other family members, who are gone from here and reflecting on how I have felt Crick’s presence on different occasions which have brought me peace and comfort; wondering about how he certainly must be enjoying heaven along with the freedom from all that plagues us here on earth.  As these thoughts went through my beleaguered mind, I began to consider what I might hopefully look forward to in the promise of Christ to share in that eternal joy of heaven.  My devotional passages spoke of the many Apostles, even the ones we don’t hear so much about, faithfully and trustingly committing their lives here on earth to spreading the messages of God’s promises to us, often sacrificing their lives in order that others might also come to know and believe.  I wondered if I was measuring up, hoping that Heaven would eventually also be revealed to me…………………..and then………………………in the stillness and emptiness of the church, a woman with whom I am only acquainted from our mutual attendance at daily Mass, taps me on the shoulder (how did she know that I was even there, kneeling at a shrine in a far off corner in the back of the church ????) and asks me if I have ever read the book………………………… Heaven Is For Real………………………………I can only imagine the startled expression on my face!!  She quite simply said, “If you haven’t read it, I think that you will really like it.”  That was all she said……………….I thanked her, she walked away as quietly as she had appeared.  Please follow the link below (for some unknown reason, and trust me (Stephanie, your phrases are haunting me LOL), I have spent hours and hours trying to resolve the fact that my wordpress blog no longer automatically links videos directly to the blog!!!)

http://www.youtube-nocookie.com/v/F3xItrGOi6Q?version=3&hl=en_US&rel=0

SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO, what do you think of that????????!!!!!!!  Well, as I am a believer (and becoming more so!!), in my heart of hearts, I believe that God and Crick were once again “discussing” me and felt that I needed a boost and yet another reason to continue to believe and trust in God’s very real Presence in my daily life and in the hope of an eternal life.  And that what awaits us is something,  “That eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither hath it entered into the heart of man, what things God hath prepared for them that love him”.   1 Corinthians 2:9.  God, who alone knows us with a knowledge we can not even begin to wrap our minds around, simply asks us to continually seek Him through the silence and stillness of prayer, and He will reveal Himself and His promises in ways that bring us hope, comfort and peace!!  I truly believe that there are some events in our lives that are just not mere “coincidences”.

Perhaps there is yet another reason why this particular post has been delayed until today and why I unwittingly chose the “Living Life” picture for this particular blog which each of the kids and I have hanging in our homes as a reminder of how Crick envisioned life should be lived.  Perhaps, it is because today is Father’s Day, a bittersweet day of remembrance for Crick and for all of our loving, caring, hard-working Dads and Grandfathers, now deceased, who spent a lifetime nurturing, providing for and giving guidance to their children and grandchildren.  Today’s Mass at Immaculate Conception was offered in Crick’s memory (and all nine of the grandchildren attended and the younger ones fidgeted, squirmed, chewed gum, ate goldfish, climbed and were passed back and forth…………..it was almost as if Crick were there egging them on…….LOL).   And……………………………..in conclusion (having exceeded my self imposed 1200 words……….imagine that!!)…………………………………………I would like to wish Christopher, Joe, Jim, the Clark and Schultheis brothers and brother-in-laws all whom I observe on a regular basis faithfully executing the responsibilities of fatherhood……………………….a very Happy Father’s Day!!

This video link is a wonderful way of celebrating all fathers everywhere and from all time, just as we also celebrate Our Father in Heaven.

P.S. If someone taps you on the shoulder and tells you Heaven is for real……………..believe it!!! LOL

OOOOPPPPSSSS!!!!

…..

OOOOOOOOOOOPPPPPPSSSSSSS…………………………………I had just sat down yesterday, turned on the television to catch up on the Memorial Tournament saw Tiger Woods teeing off and pulled this picture from the internet…………..now I see……………………………………. that it is not Tiger……………well what do you know?????………….do hope you can forgive one “nutty”, “old” person who really does try to see the humor in some of  life’s more serious issues :).  Myra, Myra, Myra, if you only knew that I was still giggling my way through life, you would be so appalled (new readers of this blog may not know the little inside Clark family joke about how I was called out by Myra, a hospice grief counselor, who was “helping” our family work through Mom’s death fifteen years ago, and apparently I tried to lighten the mood at what Myra determined to be an inappropriate time……..needless to say, we all decided that Myra was the one who needed the counseling!!……………a touchy, feely family, we are not).   The picture does actually bring me around to a conversation I had with one of my very liberal neighbors who really likes to “yank my chain”  whenever he sees me out walking.  Just the other day, (as I was finally freed from my “big black boot”), and was going out for a short walk around the block with Sydney and Josh, Phil saw me coming up the sidewalk with the kids & motioned for me to come into his backyard  to say hello to Elizabeth (his wife).  They are a super nice couple whose daughter went to grade school and high school with Stephanie.  He looked down at Sydney who was holding a bunch of thick, oval-shaped yellow leaves for her “collection” and he was reminded of the time Marion and Stephanie wanted goldfish and so they gathered similar looking leaves, put them in plastic baggies, filled them with water and “voila”!!!………….instant goldfish!!!   To know Stephanie, is to know that this is a perfectly logical solution to fulfilling her heart’s desires………..LOL (sorry Steph……….you had better work up some kind of contract for me to sign before other “family secrets” are let out of the bag!!   (Jennifer, Megan and Christopher…………………………….be worried………………….sometimes I grasp for TTTT (tall tales to tell – just made that up…………………..isn’t that alliteration?????!!!!!).  Whoa!  Got myself off track yet again…………………….as I was stating about my “liberal” neighbor (wait……………………..he actually told me recently that he is a registered Socialist…………………………………….as you can guess……………………………………. I am now praying for him (LOL).  AAAAAANNNNNNNYYYYYWay, as the kids were getting a little bored with our adult conversation and we walked back out to the front yard, he “taunted” :) me by informing me that he had just returned from a planning meeting for a  political fund-raiser for Senator Sherrod Brown (big capital “D”) and I countered back to Phil that maybe he should log on to my political blog “musingsofarightwingnut” for some real food for thought to which he laughed and asked if I had seen his new political bumper stickers on his car.  Well………………….there he kinda’ hit a nerve, because honestly I live in an extremely “blue” (Oh, and ” trust me” (two of Stephanie’s most used words :))……………..I know we are not supposed to be divided along color lines………….. I mean that as in “red”/”blue”) neighborhood and so all I ever get behind when I am waiting at a traffic light in Clintonville is an Obama 2012 car!!!!!!!!!!!  And so, over my shoulder as I was walking the kids back to the house, I teasingly hollered over my shoulder that us “tea party extremists” :) don’t feel the same need to plaster our beliefs all over our cars!  I can still see him laughing and grinning from ear to ear as we headed up the street.   Only in America!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You may all breathe a collective sigh of relief, as I have not run into any Socialists since running into Phil last week!!!  (Well, none that I am aware of!!)  I did, however, go to a bridal shower earlier yesterday afternoon for my niece, Kelly (Schultheis side) who is getting married on July 7th.   I had to regretfully decline her wedding invite as she chose her wedding date after several of my sisters, their families and mine had booked a week-long beach vacation in Kure Beach, North Carolina which happens to begin the very same weekend.  Oh, how I hate to miss a Schultheis family wedding as they are always, always so joyous and so much fun.  I would so love to be there to celebrate her special day……………I did tell Kelly that I would be sure to do a little dance on the beach in her honor…………….I just have to decide which song to dance to, and as I am such a horrible dancer it will have to be performed at a time when the beach is totally deserted!!  Once upon a time, a long, long time ago, Crick agreed to take Arthur Murray dance lessons with me.  Now while you are all wrapping your minds around that thought…………………….keep in mind that it was quite the cheap promotion, if memory serves me correctly it was maybe ten dollars for five or six lessons, anyway, it was something pretty ridiculous.  We didn’t think of this all our own, but were persuaded that it would be a great idea by Mary Ann and Tom, a trustworthy:) couple we know from I.C.  Hey, we thought getting away from the kids for a few hours and then spending some time afterwards with a couple of our peers was a different kind of “date” night.  Besides, if we were with Mary Ann and Tom, Crick and I would have to be on our best behavior and avoid any topics that might lead to a “discussion”!!  LOL  So, as I think back on this “idea”, I am remembering that the dance studio was on North High Street close to Worthington and the studio had this huge picture window through which every single one of the  dance students could be seen by any number of onlookers.  This may explain why, when I remember this one incident in particular, I can picture Crick and I hanging out in the very back of the dance studio in some remote corner!!  The instructor was trying his best to get us both to move in some kind of unison and with at least a sense of direction…………….Crick knew only one direction and that was a circle, and, a rather small circle at that!  I, being the “control” half of our relationship, kept trying to “direct” Crick to step out of the circle and venture into some kind of a…….you know…………… step, two, three……….step, two, three………..step, two, three, but we continued to look kinda’ like this: (only late 20 century version!)

In the end, the instructor finally declared us a lost cause………….I simply could not control my “controlling” and continued to do all of the “leading” while Crick, perhaps not wanting to venture out of his comfort zone in the back of the room, continued to resist my “lead”, and so we ended up just like the antiquated couple in the you tube video………….going round and round and round :).

I can’t believe that I am 1166 words into this blog (yes, WordPress actually totals up my word count) and I still haven’t gotten to the most incredible (well, at least I think so) story that I had initially intended to tell.  I do try to keep these posts under 1200 words, so as not to ramble on and on as is my tendency.  And since Crick isn’t here to “stifle” me, I am trying to do it on my own……….LOL.

Speaking of my “controlling” ways……………….I read this the other day and like the old saying goes, “If the shoe fits, wear it.”

“Seek My face at the beginning of your day.  This practice enables you to “put Me on” and wear Me” throughout the day.  Most people put on clothes soon after arising from bed.  Similarly, the sooner you “put Me on” by communicating with Me, the better prepared you are for whatever comes your way.  To “wear Me” is essentially to have My mind: to think My thoughts.  Ask the Holy Spirit to control your thinking; be transformed by this renewal within you.  Thus you are well equipped to face whatever people and situations I bring your way.  Clothing your mind in Me is your best preparation for each day. This discipline brings Joy and Peace to you and those around you.”        from Jesus Calling

Sifting Through the Sands of Time

Click for larger image

You just never know what you will find when you start “sifting through the sands of time”……………….I have always known that there was another explanation for my “quasi-activism”………………………..apparently becoming a “nut” was my destiny as the above letter so clearly illustrates.  At the “wise” old age of nine, I had decided to write a letter to President Eisenhower to inform him of my concerns about the cars “speeding” up and down Chatham Road, the street where I lived until the fourth grade.  Apparently…………………………. the President had other important matters before him, and so my reply  came from Sherman Adams who was Eisenhower’s chief of staff (kind of like getting a letter today from William Daly (former JP Morgan banker) or Jacob Lew (former COO of Citigroup Alternative Investments) the last two Obama chiefs of staff……………just sayin’………………..can’t seem to help the thoughts that take over my writing!!!  LOL).  Anyway, if only it had ended there, but evidence of my “nuttiness” continued to present itself as I further uncovered a scathing (LOL…………and trust me……….I really did laugh out loud!!) letter I had written to Paul Hornung, the sports editor of the Columbus Dispatch, in 1962 for criticizing Jerry Lucas for choosing to play professional basketball for the ABL Cleveland Pipers instead of the Cincinnati Royals (I am fiercely loyal to my favorite sports teams as well as to my favorite athletes………..you don’t dare ruffle my feathers!!!).  Just read the following excerpt from my “blistering” letter (I probably should not tell on myself, but the offense I felt as a thirteen year old truly cracks me up!!! LOL).  The letter is dated May 17, 1962:

Dear Mr. Hornung,
My name is Mary Margaret Clark.  I’m thirteen years old and attend a parochial school here in Columbus.  I have been a faithful admirer of the Ohio state basketball team and especially of Jerry Lucas for the past three years. (note to all……..I gave my five-minute speech in English class that year on Jerry Lucas!)  I am openly resentful and opposed to your write-up about the announcement decision of Lucas.  He will undoubtedly remain the idol of everyone from coast to coast (are you all laughing right along with me??!!!).  Neither you, Cincinnati or any other sports writer should open your mouth until you see what happens come basketball season because the tables will most likely be upset.  It’s none of your darn business what he cares to do with his life, it’s his future not yours.  I’m certain if you were in his shoes…………(here comes the really “scathing” part)………(and you wouldn’t be because you’re not half the man he is) you wouldn’t want any crazy sports writer tearing you down for a decision that was yours alone to make.

Seriously……………………………………………………….how does God keep a straight face when peering down from the heavens, to see what He has wrought upon the earth…………………..I can see Him now, nodding in agreement with Crick, and saying, “you are a NUT Mary Margaret, a nut!!!”  Well, I certainly don’t want to disappoint my Creator, so I will just have to carry on……………………….sorry family :).

Speaking of letters………………………..I meant to give mention (before my last post was interrupted by my “Crick” dream) to two touching letters that I received from two nieces as we passed the six month marker a few weeks ago.  One came in the form of an e-mail from Karen (Schultheis side) in which she shared a very comforting poem that I will forever cherish.  The other came in the mail from Erin (Clark side) which was equally thoughtful and caring.  It seems that Erin had wanted to write a message for the “remember when…….” basket at the funeral home, but at the time could not put her thoughts into words and so she waited until later that week when she penned this letter to me.  She had never sent the letter, but had kept it all of this time and rediscovered it earlier this month.  (I am still amazed at the irony of my receiving such compassionate notes on Crick’s passing from two of my nieces, one from each side of the family, within a day of each other, almost six months to the day of the funeral!).  Anyway, I hope Erin won’t mind my divulging a paragraph from her letter…………………..it says soooooo much about Crick and his relationship with all of his nieces and nephews on both sides of the family!!!!!!!!!!!!!     This particular incidence occurred probably ten or so years ago as Erin is twenty years old now :), and took place when the entire family had gathered at Christine and Mike’s for a holiday or some other family celebration……it reads:

“I don’t remember why, but Crick stuffed me in the basement freezer one time.  Huh?  I wonder what I did to deserve that? (selective memory perhaps, Erin???  my note)  Afterward, we (Clark nieces and nephews) took his shoes, tied them together and hung them over the clothes line downstairs.  (I don’t know why this seemed like such a good idea, he could reach better than us kids).  So we hid in that furnace room in the basement, trying to lock him out.  Turns out he more successfully locked us in!   And…………… he turned the lights out on us (seeing as how the switch is outside of the furnace room!).  The only lessons I learned from times like this…………………………………Don’t mess with Crick, he will always win.  Even in the journey of Life, Crick won.”

1968 Korea

You are so right, Erin.  I suppose this is as good a time as any to bring up the subject of Memorial Day which we will be celebrating tomorrow.   It is the perfect time to pause and reflect on the sacrifices of all of the men and women in the military who have courageously served or are now serving our country to preserve the rights and freedoms that we enjoy today.   Before Crick retired from the National Guard in 2008, he participated in one last Memorial Parade which Worthington, Ohio holds every year.  He was a soldier’s soldier……….dedicated, fiercely loyal to his unit and always, always, always proud to defend his country for future generations, especially his children and grandchildren.  For all of our military family members (and there are many!!!!) both living and deceased we salute you and I offer you one of Crick’s all time favorite patriotic songs (naturally it is from a country artist!)

Dreams From My Husband

I don’t often dream dreams that cause me to actually feel as though I am taking part in it in the present time, but last night was an exception.  It was so full of emotion and feeling that I feel compelled to put those vivid emotions in writing, if only to sort it all out for myself while the details are still crystal clear.

It was, oh, such a brief encounter with the past, but I could almost hear myself shouting out in my dream the words which were buried inside my head…………”Where is God????????????”

The scene began with just the two of us……………….Crick and myself…………standing in a room, speaking to a counselor  (& no……….it wasn’t a “marriage counselor!!  LOL) who was helping us out with the decisions facing us as we confronted the fallout of the newly delivered news of the spread of his cancer.  The social worker left the room and as I turned to look at Crick, I saw him with a cigarette dangling from his lips.  Instantly, as his eyes and mine locked on each other, the cigarette curled up and he drew it inside his mouth and he appeared to have swallowed it.  Immediately, I felt an overwhelming sense of despair, such a degree of frustration and disappointment and helplessness wash over me.  I could simultaneously feel the tears begin to spill out and it was then that I could hear myself, inside my dream, cry out, “Where is God?”  Had I not prayed every day since 1987 when his Mom passed away from esophageal cancer that he would somehow find the strength to finally, once and for all, give up smoking???  It was in that moment, I believe, that I began to wake up and I lay there thinking over various moments in time as emotions from the past year came flooding back into my consciousness.  So pronounced were these feelings that I grabbed the comfort cross (given to Crick during the last days of his illness & which I have kept close to me each night since his death) and I could feel the force of my hand squeezing the Jerusalem wood and seeking the help of the Sacred Heart whose prayer I have recently begun to include in my devotions. In the immediacy of my waking to the reality of the daylight now streaming through the windows, I began to try to sort through the reasons as to why all of these emotions were being resurrected now, so many months later.

As the events of the past day began to play back in my memory, it became more evident as to……… why this dream, and ………why now.  It just so happens that I had decided earlier that day to download some of my favorite songs from my MP3 player in order create a new CD.  As I was searching through the various functions, I saw that there were a few voice recordings showing up, and so I opened up the files and discovered several hospital and doctor visits which I had recorded so that Crick and I could reference the specifics of the doctor’s information later on.  Hearing Crick’s voice after so many months as he alternately answered and asked questions in his always teasing & carefree way could most certainly have been the catalyst for the vivid imagery of the dream.  Those stupid cigarettes were at the source of many vigorous and contentious “discussions” between the two of us  over many years and so it does not surprise me that they should make an appearance in my dream.  Always, always, always when I think of how they played such a role in shortening the life of such a wonderful, kind, caring, loving, selfless, giving person sadness fills my heart…… (hey, if the media can bestow a halo on our President, I can confer one on Crick :)! )  Another incident that took place yesterday was the all-school Mass at I.C. when the First Communicants were honored and processed in & out of the church as they had done over the weekend.  As I watched Natalie and Luke looking so excited, happy and innocent, it ran through my mind that while I knew that Crick really, in truth, had a better vision of it all than I did, my heart wanted him standing right there beside me waiting for him to reach out from the pew to teasingly harass them as they processed by.

Reflecting on the very profound sense of reality that my dream produced and particularly my question, “where is God?” gave pause for quite an early morning moment of introspection.  I have recounted the following little “Aunt Evie story” many, many times to many different people over the past few years and today I could hear her admonition to me ever so clearly.  Several years ago, I had gone over to her apartment for a visit & as we were sitting at her dining room table, I began to complain rather resentfully about Crick’s smoking addiction.  She took hold of my arm, looked me directly in my eye and said in her no-nonsense way, “Mary Margaret…………..some people are just stronger (Aunt Evie emphasis) than other people.”  What she said to me that day has resonated with me in so many scenarios ever since.  She was absolutely right……we are all imperfect imitations of our Creator, we find ourselves continually falling short of our aspirations to become the best versions of ourselves and that is why we so need each other…………..to support one another, to forgive one another, to understand one another and to love one another.

Now, here is the really interesting ending to all of this which goes directly back to the last sentence.  Later this afternoon when I retrieved my mail I saw two personal envelopes amidst the usual array of junk mail.  I opened the first and found a most heartwarming letter from a very dear Army buddy of Crick’s from his two-year tour of duty in Korea back in 1967-69.  In part, he wrote that for two months he had tried unsuccessfully to write me a condolence note, but that he could not find the words until that evening when he had been watching re-runs of the final “good-bye” episode of M-A-S-H (one of Crick’s all time favorite TV series) and decided he could no longer put off the letter.  Allan wrote, “Jim (of course, Crick would not want his Army pals to know that he had a nickname of “Crick”) befriended me when I first arrived in Korea.  We were fast friends as we went through Army trials together, laughed together, froze together in the winter and sweated together in the summer…………………………Many parts of my life are now just a blur, but I remember just about every moment of my time in Korea with Jim.  I will always owe Jim for being my Army mentor…………………………please, when you have the opportunity, tell your children that this is one old soldier and one old soldier’s wife who knew Jim, loved Jim and are truly sorry about his death.”  That one letter would have been quite enough to confirm the belief  I have, that God’s abundant love continues to shower me with His un-endless blessings, but there was to be more.  As I put Allan’s comforting letter down, I reached for the second envelope……………………..it was a brief, but touching and compassionate note from a very dear childhood friend who had already shared so much of her time and effort over the past year in sending (over many miles) packages of soups and cookies and had also given quite a generous donation to I.C. in Crick’s name……………….and now……….  was sending yet another selfless and magnanimous financial gift.  As I have stated before, tears do not come easily to me, but this past month has been a bit of an emotional one and mostly in a good way as I have given witness to the genuine kindness and nobleness of friends and family.

One last thought about the significance of this dream, these blessings, this day…………………………………………………………….

“As you sit quietly in My Presence, remember that I am a God of abundance.  I will never run out of resources.  My capacity to bless you is unlimited.  You live in a world of supply and demand, where necessary things are often scarce.  Even if you personally have enough, you see poverty in the world around you.  It is impossible for you to comprehend the lavishness of My provisions: the fullness of My glorious riches. Through spending time in My Presence you gain glimpses of My overflowing vastness.  These glimpses are tiny foretastes of  what you will experience eternally in heaven.  Even now you have access to as much of Me as you have faith to receive.  Rejoice in My abundance—-living by faith, not by sight.”                                                             from Jesus Calling

Tonight I will give thanks to a God who has blessed me with a faith that allows me to experience His love in the goodness of all those whom He has placed on my journey :).

P.S. Did you all catch the “significance” of the title of the blog??!! Kinda’ catchy, don’t you think??…………………now where have I heard that before??!!

P.P.S. This song’s for you Crick:)

Angels of the NTFD, Dynamic Duo, 1st Communion

I hereby officially designate the country song, “Angels Among Us”, as the Schultheis family’s theme song.  The lyrics to that song have resonated over and over and over throughout Crick’s journey, and as the above picture indicates, those same words are echoing once again!!   Coming to the rescue of a deteriorating, over thirty year old retaining wall were the five gentlemen in the above picture.  Four of Christopher’s Norwich Township firefighter friends heard about our crumbling, decrepit railroad ties and unselfishly offered their considerable knowledge, talent, time, energy, sweat and labor to construct the fabulous stone remake!!!  From left to right in the picture are Tony, Chris, Kris, Brett and Harrison……………….they have definitely earned their names on the “Angels Among Us Hall of Fame”!!  While they were toiling outside, I was getting quite a good workout inside keeping an eye on the “Dynamic Duo”……..that would be these two infamous cohorts in crime……………………………………  who took time out from their escapades long enough to sit safely on the floor for a quick snack while I attempted to regroup LOL!!!  If I were only quick enough with my camera (as in accessing the correct “menu selection”……….did you know there is a setting for “vivid” color……………….uh, would I want “dull” color??, a setting for “poster “effect…………..I would want extra large pics of me or my family??, a setting for a “fish eye” effect……………..wwhhaatt ??, a “miniature” effect……………as if I don’t have enough trouble seeing!!, and believe it or not, a “toy” camera effect…………….wouldn’t I have purchased a toy camera if I had wanted one??)……………oops, distracted myself once again!!!  Anyway, as I was saying, if only I could just “point and shoot”, I would be able to capture the charming pair as they were doing battle over who was entitled to possession of whatever it was that Josh wanted!  You see, Josh has it in his mind that whenever he and Mayce are together………… whatever she has is his and whatever he has is his (LOL),  and he has discovered that pulling on her cute little pigtails makes for a pretty convenient argument that she should just hand it over to him!!  Mind you, Mayce doesn’t always acquiesce (she has two older brothers and an attitude, after all!) and she knows how to push back as well as how to be an instigator herself.  Just the other day after Josh had ended a 20 second time-out  (he is only 20 months old) for some little transgression against Mayce, Christopher had instructed him to tell her he was sorry and to give her a hug.  The scene of Josh laying his head on Mayce’s shoulder and Mayce’s tiny forgiving hand patting him gently on his back would have made a great Kodak moment…………………………….if, like I said…………………..I could have simply figured out which “effect” that Kodak moment called for!!!

There really and truly is rarely a dull moment around here.  Each and every morning that I wake up and “put my two feet on the floor” I have to be ready for just about anything.  A phone ringing can mean an invitation to breakfast or dinner, a reminder of a baseball or soccer game, an Irish step-dancing competition or a school event, or it can mean I am being called into action for some impromptu babysitting when there is an unexpected snag in parents’ working assignments or when a sick grandchild needs to be taken to the emergency room as happened just recently.  Tommy, who had been down with a fever virus over a week ago and then contracted strep along with some gastrointestinal issues finally ended up in Children’s Hospital needing some intravenous fluid.  It is surprising how kids can look like they are at death’s door one day, and the next day they are back to bouncing off the walls driving their parents crazy!!  While Tommy was so sick and feverish, and as he was laying in his bed just before drifting off to sleep, he told Stephanie that his hand was talking to him, whispering to him and saying “inappropriate” things.  Unfortunately, or fortunately, exhausted as he was, he fell asleep before he could explain what he meant by “inappropriate”!!!!!  I’m thinking that “what goes on inside Tommy’s head, stays inside Tommy’s head”  LOL!!!

We celebrated not one, not two, but three First Communions this weekend…………Luke, Natalie & Grace (Billy’s daughter/my great-niece)…………Mom and Dad began the legacy at Immaculate Conception back in 1953 when Jimmy entered first grade and there has been an unbroken line of Clark’s  attending I.C. ever since……we certainly have come a long way from no tuition and the likes of Sister Archangela and Sister Marcia and 100 students in each grade to $$$$$ tuition and Mrs. Hiss and Mrs. Buseck and less than 60 in each grade, but we all know how proud Mom and Dad would be of the tradition being carried on in the great-grandchildren.  Prior to their very special day, Luke and Natalie had a homework assignment which the Riunite Lambrusco (you know, the favorite wine of the informed, highly refined and discriminately tasteful “folks”………………………..[threw that word in there just for you, Christine]!) played an important role.  It seems that the second graders were supposed to taste some red wine and it just so happens that I had some Riunite on hand :).  I poured a teeny, tiny amount in a small glass and Luke and Natalie each sampled it, with great reluctance I should add, and in the end decided that it was palatable.  Apparently, there had also been some sort of discussion in school regarding the drinking of the wine and this information was relayed from Luke to Tommy.  As I was having dinner at Stephanie and Joe’s the night of the First Communion practice, Luke was trying to explain to Joe what the practice would entail, when Tommy excitedly interrupted saying that Luke was going to receive “the Body of the Christ” and “the legal”…………………..it seems that the teachers informed the class that the wine is “legal” for them to drink in the context of the Mass, therefore wine and legal are now synonymous in Tommy’s mind.  (Oh perish the thought!!!)

Now, you may be wondering just what this picture is doing in this post…………..let me explain.  You see, I was invited by our President (via his campaign e-mail) to come see him when he was in Columbus last weekend and so I decided to head down to the Schott (“my left foot” and all).  I parked across the street from the Arena and the Romney campaign bus was in the parking lot and so I snapped this picture.  I got there about three hours ahead of the President’s arrival and having a few more pressing things to do that day, I decided to forgo the speech and hang out for a short while supporting a group from Americans for Prosperity.  All I have to say (well, for now anyway!!) is that, in my continued quest for whatever is truth in this political climate, I am learning that this is going to be a looonnnggg six months :).

Which seems to fit right in with this quote which I should probably read more frequently so as to keep true peace in my heart……..LOL:

“Do not search for security in the world you inhabit.  You tend to make mental checklists of things you need to do in order to gain control of your life.  If only you could check everything off your list you could relax and be at peace.  But the more you work to accomplish that goal, the more things crop up on your list.  The harder you try, the more frustrated you become.  There is a better way to find security in this life.  Instead of scrutinizing your checklist, focus your attention on My Presence with you.  This continual contact with Me will keep you in My Peace.  Moreover, I will help you sort out what is important and what is not, what needs to be done now and what does not.  Fix your eyes not on what is seen (your circumstances), but on what is unseen (My Presence).”                                                                      from Jesus Calling

“Therefore, we are not discouraged; rather, although our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day.  For this momentary light affliction is producing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, as we look not to what is seen but to what is unseen; for what is seen is transitory, but what is unseen is eternal.”                                            2 Corinthians 4:16-18

Six Months

I had debated on a suitable picture for today’s posting and had contemplated one which contained some rather tongue-in-cheek political innuendo, thereby hoping to add some “spark” to the blog :).  But then, as memories of  Crick seem to be more and more in the forefront of my thoughts as we approach the six month anniversary of his death, it seemed much more fitting to shine the light on him this time.   Therefore, I decided that the above picture would be, oh so apropos, since he is apparently sending down personal reminders to his extended family as the above picture indicates :).   A few weeks ago. Judy & Bill were driving near their home in Cincinnati when they drove past the above billboard.   Judy made Bill stop the car so she could take a picture of it & then sent it on to me, Jennifer, Megan, Stephanie and Christopher…………..I have since downloaded it & am now using it as my wallpaper on my cell phone.  Now every time I turn on my phone (about a gazillion times a day!!!!), I see his name & am reminded of how he could truly, at times, be that “pain” in the neck who so famously produced the “nut” that I morphed into…….. LOL!!!!!    The billboard is an advertisement for a chiropractic practice, but I honestly think that it is Crick’s very own “Mission Accomplished” sign, if you know what I mean!!! :).

Yesterday, May 2nd, was exactly six months since Crick’s death, and in some ways I still feel his absence as though it occurred just the other day.  Recently I have begun to notice that everyday outings, to mundane places such as the dreaded grocery store, will often produce unexpected pangs of sadness when I return home.  I remember commenting to Crick on more than one occasion, that on any given grocery trip, I would run into certain couples we knew who did their shopping together and suggested to him that perhaps we should try that…………………….I know………………………..can you believe that I even proposed such a preposterous idea???  Of course, he would then always point out that we could find enough things to argue about without resorting to creating a “grocery store incident” (a.k.a.  the “King’s Island, Main Street incident”) by debating in Aisle #1 his preference for the grocery store brand over my preference for the name brand or in Aisle #2 his preference for steak over my preference for pasta or in Aisle #3  his  preference for a gallon container of milk over my preference for two half-gallon containers or in Aisle #4  his preference for one ply tissue over my preference for two ply tissue or in Aisle #5  his preference for choosing any paper towel displaying any decorative design over my preference for just plain white…………………………..OMG…………………………what was I thinking?????………………………………  A-n-y-way, after I would return home (alone!) from the grocery,  I would always purposely create a bit of commotion when I lugged the first bag or two from the trunk of the car into the house so as to make certain Crick knew that the “martyr” had come home.  He would then come out to give assistance with the remaining bags & then help me to put all of the groceries away.   The point of my rambling is, that it is in the ordinarily common-place tasks such as this, that I have reluctantly come to a better understanding of the precise meaning of the words “heartache” and “heartbreak”.   On the most unsuspecting of occasions I can turn and still see his infectious grin and hear his booming voice, and at times, I can, in the silence of a moment, place myself back to that December day, in that instant when the defective Christmas lights miraculously brightened, and I can truly feel his presence.

How I wish that I could not be so impatient with myself as I search for words to give voice to all that lies deep within my heart and soul.  Fortunately, there are others whose words can fill the void, so as to convey the blessing of  God’s merciful comfort and peace which I constantly find through prayer and through the many angels He sends to me.  The relevance of the devotional reading for May 2nd seems to be that voice that I am at this moment seeking:

“Living in dependence on Me is the way to enjoy abundant life.  You are learning to appreciate tough times, because they amplify your awareness of My Presence.  Tasks that you used to dread are becoming rich opportunities to enjoy My closeness.  When you feel tired, you remember that I am your Strength; you take pleasure in leaning on Me.  I am pleased by your tendency to turn to Me more and more frequently, especially when you are alone……………………………..whisper My Name; this tiny act of trust brings Me to the forefront of your consciousness, where I belong.  As you bask in the blessing of My nearness, My life can flow through you to others.  This is abundant life.”                                        (from “Jesus Calling”)

The past couple of weeks have seen many twists and turns in the “life and times of the Schultheis, Wallace, and Baird families” which I will reserve for another post as I did promise to give Crick his time:).  I do however have to mention how Christopher & Jessica’s girls continue to keep me humble!!!!  Today I was driving Sydney to pre-school and as I was stopped at a traffic light, I decided to quickly refresh my make-up (oh vanity of vanities!!).  Sydney asked what I was doing and I explained that I was putting some “blusher” on my cheeks, and she, ever so sweetly, says,………………………………………………. “Oh, is that to cover up your wrinkles????????????!!!!!!!!”………………………………  Somewhere, Crick is howling with laughter!!!!

My Left Foot

The "ball & chain" cast designed for "my left foot"

The “ball & chain” cast designed for “my left foot”

The above picture is posted compliments of my orthopedic foot doctor, Dr. Lee.  At my appointment last Tuesday he stated that I would be provided the opportunity to expand on my black and white fashion theme and that it was going to add a whole new dimension to my world!!! Well now, that was a bit of an understatement!  I feel quite a bit like Frankenstein as I “clump” down the stairs these days one slow measured step at a time.  Who knew (well, except for maybe that darned old rose-bush and Crick……LOL) that a teeny tiny little metatarsal bone (so tiny that the fracture was barely visible on the x-ray) could  require 7 weeks of healing with a rock hard, clunky, burdensome, awkward, bulky, cumbersome (I assume you are getting my drift!!) cast?   Looks  like Edwina Scissorhands is going to have an extended vacation, if you will, and my OCD brain will have to take a chill pill………………………right about now, condo living is beginning to look pretty enticing :).   As this is my very first ever experience in having a part of me encased in cement, er…..fiberglass, I was not fully prepared for the “casting” procedure which awaited me, that is, until I was introduced to Lyndsey (a super friendly male tech who could have passed for an Ohio State football tackle!).  As soon as I was seated in the “casting” room, he asked me what color of cast I wanted.  Well, it just so happened that I had talked to Megan as I was waiting to be seen and she suggested that I ask for a black cast, as not only a MM fashion statement, but also for the practicality of not showing the dinginess of an aging cast.  Soooo, I questioned Lyndsey as to how many people actually request a “black” cast.  He just grinned, shook his head, and said, “I’m not going to tell you, you have to decide for yourself.”  I  told him that decision-making is definitely not a forte of mine, as anyone who has ever dined or shopped with me can attest.  (Keep in mind that my kitchen and bathroom are black and white, my wardrobe is black and white, the exterior of my house is black, white and gray, my car is gray…………………….need I say more??).  At any rate, he handed me a large key ring with ten or so color swatches of orthotape for me to choose from (oh, there’s that darned preposition at the end of a sentence again).  As I looked each one over, I asked him what was the most popular color, but once again, he just shrugged with his wide tooth grin and repeated that it was strictly my choice.  Eventually, he took the ring of colors from my hand, walked over to a nearby desk and when he returned, he handed me back the ring……………minus half of the colors.   So he looked at me, and looked again at the ring, and then asked, “Now…….. does that help a little?”  Uh no, not really (I thought to myself) and still debating, I continued looking over the swatches for a gray color, which Lyndsey sadly (for both of us!) informed me was not a color option.  Sensing that the two of us could be sitting there in the casting room until we both turned old & gray, he once more took the ring from my hand, again walked over to the desk, and this time when he returned………………………. there were only two swatches remaining on the key ring……………………………………………yep………………………………………white & black!!!!!  LOL   Ohhh noooo, I then began to feel a sense of mild panic set in as Lyndsey stood before me patiently “forcing” me, “willing” me, to choose between my two favorite colors!!………………………………………………….white?? ……..or black?? (it never fails for me………… only two choices……….just like the “true & false” tests of my childhood………. two choices & I inevitably choose wrong!!!).  And,in keeping with that scenario I,………. (drum roll, please)……… chose…………………… white!!!!!!!!and now,……………..as I peer down at my aging, dirt smudged cast……..oh how I wish I had chosen black!!!!

I really and truly did meet my match in Lyndsey, “the foot warden” (a title I chose for him since he was, after all, responsible for imprisoning “my left foot!!).  Taking a cue from Carole (the family’s designated “whiner and complainer :)), I made sure that he knew how taxing this situation was now going to be for my well documented OCD behavior.  After all, who was going to tame the prolific euonymous, which, if left untended, would soon overtake my entire back yard????  Who was going to trim, edge, thatch, weed, mow????  And do you know what his reply was??!!  He told me to GOI !!!!!!!!!!!!!! ……………………………… G-E-T   O-V-E-R   I-T!!!!! Guess I will have to thank him for giving me a new acronym which I can now use on the grandkids!   LOL

Trying hard to be true to Crick’s memory of seeing the “glass half-full”, I am seizing these seven weeks as an opportunity to broaden my blogging horizons!!  And so, I have just recently created a new wordpress blog titled “musingsofarightwingnut”.  I know, I know many of you are nodding your heads in vigorous agreement with the title :).  To be perfectly truthful the new addition to my blogging ventures is an act of compassion (LOL) toward my poor, besieged family members & a few friends who have been enduring months and months of political e-mails.  The new blog site is something I have been contemplating for a while as I have been searching for a way to apprise them of the information that I am learning from the detailed research of others. and in a way that does not infringe on their “in-boxes” :).

As I continue on this “journey” of mine, and, as the “angels” persist in hovering over me………. showing themselves in the form of family and friends who, through a phone call, a visit, an offer of help with a home maintenance issue, a kind and uplifting word, an unexpected card or note…………I am always, always, always being reassured of God’s love and care.

P.S.  Hey, Red Sox fans!!  Can’t help but mention the Yankees amazing (15-9) come from behind (losing 9-0 in bottom of the 5th) win !!!!

Barack, Buckeyes & “The Bob”

Do I know how to get your attention, or what??!!!  And why, oh why, does our President torment me so????  There I was sitting in my living room watching the championship game as Kentucky was beating up on Louisville………… & then……………. halftime happened, & out of nowhere…………. “he” shows up for yet another (!!!!!!!) interview (er, correct that……campaign speech)!  Even I was trying to escape from politics for an evening!!!!   I immediately picked up the phone & called Christopher (he is now my “political” sounding board) & then l pulled out my laptop & found CBS sports’ e-mail address & sent off a complaint……..LOL!!!!!  Okay, okay, I know it probably went to their spam inbox, but taking some kind of action made me feel better & brought my BP down a few notches :).

Moving on now to the Buckeye “pity party” promised in my last post…………………boo hoo hoo…………”tears on my pillow, pain in my heart, caused by you” (lyrics from Little Anthony’s song – more Google searching for you youngsters!!!)………. we were, oh so close, but apparently the wrong team came out of the locker room for the second half!!!!  All of that being said, the Bucks made it an exciting season & getting to the Final Four was quite an accomplishment.  I must say that I am not sorry about seeing Jared Sullinger leave for the NBA…………I think that his ego got a bit too big for the Buckeyes………and anyway, we have Craft, Thomas, et al who are anxious to have another shot at the NCAA title next year………….so stay tuned!

Let’s see, what else has been going on around here that hasn’t either made me go crazy (B.O.) or made me cry (the Buckeyes)???  Oh yeah, the “rose-bush incident”.  As I am always doing battle with a little bit of OCD  (Christine told me that I really have “CDO”…………………..it’s just like OCD……………only in alphabetical order………………………………..just as it should be!).  Anyway, two weeks ago as my eyes were scoping out our backyard “jungle”, I decided it was time to resurrect “Edwina” Scissorhands & so I hauled out the electric hedge trimmer & the “electrical taped “repaired electric cord (if you remember, I have this propensity for cutting through not only, hedges, but cords as well).  Having successfully accomplished the task of neatly trimming back all of the overgrowth (electrical cord still intact!), I set about digging up several bushes which were crowding the landscape.  These pesky bushes were more deeply rooted in the ground than I had thought, but I persevered & after I pulled four of them, I decided to go after one last bush………….it was a rose-bush.  Now here is where Crick enters into the story.  Late last summer as I was once again on a mission to “organize” the yard, Crick stepped out the back door & saw me, shovel in hand, attacking two of the four rose bushes in the rock garden.  He yelled out, “What are  you doing to those rose bushes, there is nothing wrong with them!!”  To which I replied, “I have never liked these rose-bushes & so I am digging them up  & getting them out of here.”  He restated that they were perfectly fine bushes, that he liked them, and so, we compromised ………two out of the four were spared from “Edwina”.  That is……………..until just about two weeks ago.  So…………..as I surveyed the yard once more, my eyes came to rest on the two remaining rose-bushes & with the shovel as my accomplice, I set about to take the two, down to one!  When I finished, with rose-bush & roots in hand, & as I was stepping down from the elevated area of the rock garden, my foot hit a low spot & twisted just enough so that I immediately knew I had damaged something.  I went inside to put some ice on “my left foot” (anyone remember the movie from 1989″????) & as I sat looking at my foot, I thought about Crick & thought that perhaps, just perhaps, he might be chuckling to himself………………..I imagine that if I could hear him now, he would be saying, “You just couldn’t let it go, could you?………you had to have your way :)!”  Well, of course I did, and now, I am paying for it :).  I had an x-ray taken this week & learned that I have a non-displaced fracture in my foot & will be heading to an orthopedic foot doctor on Tuesday.  Hopefully, the doc will decide if I just need to continue wearing a foot boot for a while longer & that the fracture will just heal on its own.  End of story (I hope!).

Now, after hearing of this next particular incident which took place earlier in the week,………………do you think I have become too much of a morning fixture at Bob Evans??  You see, as I am a creature of habit (I inherited this trait from Dad)………….after morning Mass, I invariably head to “the Bob” along with “Oscar” to have breakfast (my favorite meal of the day) & to research the political news of the day.  Several of the servers know my routine (pathetic, I know!) & on this particular day, I also came armed (oops, politically incorrect word there) with a coupon for a free coffee.  On this visit my server who was not a “regular”,  very pleasantly took my order for a “well-cooked” waffle.  Now, there is also a bit of a side story to the waffle order as Christine, Erin, Katie, Bobby & Jo can attest to……………………maybe a year or so ago, B.E. decided to take the Belgian waffle & the cinnamon roll off the menu……….GASP!!  They didn’t even conduct a survey of their patrons………….I mean, surely grits & fruit were more expendable than my two favorites………………..and soooooo since then my choices have been reduced to eggs/toast, french toast or a hot cake.  This “creature of habit” does not deviate from these three food choices, even though the management finally realized the error of their ways & returned the waffle to the menu a couple of months, they raised the price of the waffle, & so I must now choose frugality over favorites!!    Okay so, back to the waffle order story…………………….the server returned to my table with the “very precisely cooked” waffle which I proceeded to bite into when Eric (a “regular” AM server) walks over to my booth, stares at my waffle & asks, “Did you get the right order today????  I saw the order come up to the window & I figured someone had put in the wrong order for you!!”  I explained to him, that since I was getting a free coffee that day, I could splurge on my favorite waffle.  He smiled & walked away, & then not three minutes later, Charles (another of the “regulars”) came over to check on me, taking note of my waffle, thinking as Eric had, that my server had given me the wrong breakfast!!  As he too walked away smiling, I could overhear the two of them commenting behind the counter to each other about how they had both assumed that the waffle couldn’t possibly have been mine!!

As I read that last paragraph over, I began thinking to myself that I continue to reveal waaaayyyyy too much about myself, but then, I see the heading at the top of the page & it reads:…………. diary of a nut………………………..what, I guess, would one expect??   Could Crick have imagined that his designating me a “nut” would one day lead me, myself, to declare it to the entire world?????  Methinks, I underestimated his wisdom all along…..LOL!!!!

Before I close out a post, I usually like to pass along words of inspiration that have encouraged me to see the “glass half-full” & have provided solace to my many anxieties.  The following passage from Jesus Calling is one that I find myself referring back to quite frequently, for it alludes to Isaiah 30:15 “For thus said the Lord God, the Holy One of Israel:  By waiting and calm you shall be saved, in quiet and in trust your strength lies.”………………………………………………………………..

“Let Me fill you with my Love, Joy and Peace.  These are the Glory-gifts, flowing from my living Presence………….as you go through this day, trust Me to provide the strength you need moment by moment.  Don’t waste energy wondering whether you are adequate for today’s journey.  My Spirit within you is more than sufficient to handle whatever this day may bring.  That is the basis for your confidence.  In quietness (spending time alone with Me) and confident trust (relying on My sufficiency) is your strength.”

Have a great week!
